Designing the Japanese Path
The Japanese path, inspired by Buddhist gardens in Japan, conveys a peaceful, quiet mood. The sounds include gongs and bells and the light triggers are subtle. Creatures scurry across the screen surprising the player.
Pat Roberts and Jocelyn Cohen visited over fifteen gardens in the Yokohama and Kyoto areas of Japan, taking over 500 photographs to capture the feel for this path. The order for the paths was composed using a timebased methodology so a variety of sequences could be arranged rapidly until the path had the right overall sensibility. A variety of elements were composited together before the entire scene was painted.
